The New York Rangers send a clear to message to Igor Shesterkin during contract negotiations
The New York Rangers and head coach Peter Laviolette send their starting goalie Igor Shesterkin a clear message after another tough loss.
This season the Rangers have been off to a decent start mainly thanks to their goaltenders, Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick, who both have been on top of their games, which as ultimately helped the Rangers achieve their 9-4-1 record to start the season.
However, things are going to change as they way Peter Laviolette is running things is starting to raise some concerns, as Igor Shesterkin seems to be having issues as he faced another tough 6-3 loss against the Winnipeg Jets.
Here's what Laviolette had to say regarding the two elite goaltenders:
«Even more impressive to Quick's performance the other night, he wasn't in the role,» Laviolette said. «Shesty was on fire and there weren't a lot of games, a lot of days off, yet he still stayed sharp through practice. Being a pro for so many years, he knows how to be ready when he gets thrown into games like in Detroit.»
Laviolette then continued:
«When games start to heat up and we have eight games in 14 nights, we are going to need more fixtures in our lineup, including our goaltending.»
Which is a very good idea considering Igor Shesterkin clearly needs some to rest and figure out what he can improve on. Along with sending Shesterkin a clear message that Jonathan Quick will be getting just as much ice time, and that they don't need to solely rely on Shesterkin.
The 38-year-old started a total of 26 games for the Rangers last season and has started in 3 games this season, with hopes that he can play just as many games, if not more.
