It's no secret to Oilers fans and other fans throughout the NHL that the Oilers are looking for a major upgrade on their defence.
The team has been maligned with poor defensive play and weak goaltending that has prevented the Oilers from rising in the standings.
A player like Trouba maybe the exact player the Oilers need as he tends to play with snarl, physicality and the ability to take on the opponents most talented players.
The Rangers have made no qualms that they had been wanting to move Trouba for the past couple of months.
During the summer, general manager Chris Drury had made it clear that he was willing to move Trouba with rumors of a possible deal with the Detroit Red Wings that did not transpire.
Drury has also made it clear that he wants to shake up his roster as he feels that the team's chemistry and makeup is not working and has seen the team fall out of the standings as they were the best team in the NHL last year.
Trouba contract may prove to be an issue as he currently has an $8 million AAV with two more years remaining on his deal.
For a trade to be done a money in money out situation or a possible third party enters to help take away some of the cap hit to make the deal work.
The Oilers have sufficient draft capital and some talented players in their minor system in Bakersfield who could help the Rangers down the road including Matthew Savoie.
Adding Trouba would also remove some of the sting after the Oilers lost Philip Broberg along with Dylan Holloway to an offer sheet That has hurt the Oilers in terms of their depth and their speed.
Making a trade of this magnitude early in the season is quite rare but with the resolve from Drury and the need for change in the Oilers may see a deal come sooner than later.
