It's no secret that the current NHL playoff format is loathed by many fans and former players.
During the latest episode of the Spittin Chiclets, hosts Paul Bissonnette and Ryan Whitney discussed their hatred towards the current wild card format and want the NHL to return to the old system.
They set the example that the Boston Bruins who are currently leading the Atlantic division by a wide margin will be facing off against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round with the current format.
It seems highly unfair that a team that has played the way the Bruins have and overcoming the loss of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci due to retirement should be rewarded for a great season by playing a lesser opponent in the standings.
The current format began in 2013-2014 when the NHL decided to do a major realignment with divisions, conferences, and the playoff format.
This subject was brought up briefly but never gained any traction recently in the NHL GM meetings but as the years go on, I expect this discussion to get louder as more players and more agents weigh in on changing the format back to one vs eight in the next collective bargaining agreement discussion.
