The team needs to break through the Easter Conference, where as Trouba's goals no longer align with the team.
The team needs to find a way to move the Captain, but it's been difficult since he submitted his 15 team NTC.
Say GM Chris Drury did do his best to move Trouba, while taking into account family issues. Where are some landing spots for Trouba?
The hometown Red Wings, should be considered the #1 destination, as they have an interest in Trouba. Could Steve Yzerman help convince Trouba to make the move? Trouba could fit under their salary cap and use some help on defense, as theirs was one of the worse in the NHL last season. Trouba could make up for the loss of Jake Walman earlier in the offseason.
The Sabres have been quiet during the off-season, despite there being needs unaddressed with the roster. The have a good amount of salary cap flexibility, and want to end a 13-year playoff drought. Given how much veteran talent they lost, Trouba would be a great addition as a leader, and in order to fit into the roster, play lower in the lineup. Buffalo would be closer as it's still in New York, but it's not New York City, where he prefers to stay.
The Blackhawks are down tearing it down, and into the building stage of their continual rebuild. They have Connor Bedard, face of the franchise, and have added Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teraveinen, and could afford to add Trouba. While they do have Seth Jones, they could use veteran leadership down in the lineup.
It again depends if he would waive his NTC.
With a similar situation to Chicago, the Sharks are currently rebuilding and have a good amount of salary cap space. The havey 1st overall, Macklin Celebrini to build around as well. They have one of the worst defensive groups in the league and could use Trouba to strengthen their backend.
But would Trouba waive his NTC to arrive in a place 3,000 miles away from New York?
It certainly it the most realistic spot for Trouba right now, even if it isn't a landing spot.
While the Rangers could find a take for Trouba's contract, it's likely that their on his no-trade list, and the teams he prefers wouldn't be interested.
San Jose, Chicago, Anaheim and Utah could be teams interested in Trouba but again they're likely on his no-trade list, making a deal difficult to make in the meantime. The two are married at the hip, until something drastic happens between the two, or Drury waives Trouba like Goodrow.
