The Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren, did something you'd never expect last night. He ended up contributing to the game, in a way a goalie never should, he scored on himself.

Lindgren would attempt to cycle the puck off the boards and instead would hammer it home on accident.

The likelihood of it happening didn't seem possible to Charlie, Ryan Lindgren's brother and sometimes rival.

But it did give Tampa Bay Lightning fans a good gut laugh, and Washington Capitals fans an existential crisis that night.

"When I made that big mistake, we all pretty much laughed it off," said Lindgren, who finished with 24 saves. "Even me, I chucked that puck out of the rink and I kind of chuckled to myself. It was obviously the worst mistake I've probably ever made in my life in terms of on ice. I don't know what I was thinking. ... The guys picked me up and I've got a lot of respect for those guys."

Lindgren's goal would put the Lightning up 4-3 over the Capitals, and keep in mind this was with 7:25 left in the third period.

This meant Coach Spencer Carberry and the Washington Capitals would have to play twice as hard to win the game.

Despite Lindgren's gaffe, they would come back to secure a win over the Lightning, 5-4.

Lindgren would keep a lighthearted response to the incident:

"You've obviously got two choices in that moment: You can either go in your shell or you can go and battle," Lindgren said. "It wasn't fun in the moment, but the guys rallied around me and found a way to get a big win."

It's obvious there are always circumstances and plays in a game no one means to execute or happen, including accidental hits.

This was just a case of a reverse goalie goal, the kind no one wants to see.

Fortunately for Lindgren, he had enough support up front to mount a comeback in the third period thanks to Tom Wilson, and John Carlson bailing him out near the end of the third.

Should the Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren be removed from the net for the next two games for this lack of discipline?
