New York Rangers announce unexpected last-minute roster transaction ahead of upcoming game
The New York Rangers have made a major transaction prior to the game against the Nashville Predators. With Urho Vaakanainen entering the lineup, they have reassigned defenseman Connor Mackey to the AHL.
Connor Mackey was one of the last defensemen the Rangers would assign to the AHL after training camp ended. There was though he'd had what it takes to make the team's regular lineup.
But instead would be sent down to the AHL for more experience, and play-time with the Wolfpack.
«It's tough being up here for most of camp,» Mackey said. «Being one of the last guys to get let go was hard for sure, but it's a business. Obviously down there worked hard, had a positive attitude and trying to continue to get better was my focus each day, still doing that right now.»
This season, he was fortunate enough to get another look due to K'Andre Miller's injury. Allowing him to gain experience in the big league.
Yet in 2 games he was unable to make an impact, but would accumulate 5 PIMs for his efforts.
Mackey, 28, has recorded six points (2 g, 4 a) and a +2 +/- rating in 22 games with the Wolf Pack this season, his second with the club. He has also appeared in two games with the Rangers, recording five PIMs.
He will return to the AHL and hope that he'll make it up the depth charts once more to get another look in the NHL.
Mackey went undrafted and would begin his career in the NHL signing an ELC with the Calgary Flames in 2020. He would later be dealt to the Arizona Coyotes in a package deal sending Brett Ritchie with him.
GM Chris Drury would later sign him as a free-agent to a two-year deal on July 1st, 2023.
