A former Rangers legend who lifted the Stanley Cup in 1994 has been sentenced to one year of suspended jail time.
Esta Tikkanen was convicted by the District Court of Western Uusimaa in his home country Finland.
Tikkanen was once known as one of the NHL's best, and most versatile forwards is now dealing with huge legal issues.
The crime he committed was failing to file 165K in Euros on income received abroad while failing to file his taxes on time. The crime occurred between 2015 and 2019.
Tikkanen failed to report 410K euros in income received from abroad, in addition to the 165K he failed to file upon receipt.
The Rangers legend has denied any criminal wrongdoing, but acknowledged his lack of reporting and has pledged to correct course with this sentencing.
Tikkanen himself claimed that it wasn't an evasion of taxes, but a lack of oversight by himself.
During the sentencing the former NHL legend acknowledged once the lack of oversight was discovered he corrected course and started paying his taxes right away.
Nevertheless, the court rejected his arguments on the ground that such omission to declare income for so many successive years constituted serious fraud and, therefore could not be punished with a mere suspended sentence.
Tikkanen was a part of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier and would win four Stanley Cups.
He'd earn his final Cup in New York in 1994, with his former Oilers teammate Mark Messier.
His sentence has been suspended and will allow him to conduct his affairs normally while getting his finances in order. Finland's thrives of holding everyone accountable, and Tikkanen has learned a lesson about being financially transparent in his home district.
