This award is given to the top rookie that has shown great promise and it is selected by the media. It's named after Lars-Erik Sjoberg who was a member of the Rangers organization and their main scout in Europe for eight years who died at a young age of 43 after contracting cancer in October of 1987.
The 23-year-old forward who stands at six foot 7 and 240 lbs was drafted by the Rangers in 2019, in the sixth round 161st overall. He has shown to Rangers management and the coaching staff but he belongs on this team as he had played a great preseason and showing off his scoring touch as he scored several goals including a game winner.
He also showed his tough side as he is quite physical and uses his size to take players out of the play and help shut down others.
Last season, he played for the Hartford Wolfpack where he played 40 games, scoring 11 goals with five assists for 16 points and had 16 penalty minutes. Some fans were curious to see if he would outplay Matt Rempe and it appears that head coach Peter Laviolette intends to keep both players in the lineup.
The Rangers had a relatively quiet offseason as they made a few changes to their lineup but have basically kept everything intact. It appears that general manager Chris Drury hopes to lean on some of his younger players to help control cap space and see if they can make the team.
The Rangers will begin their season on the road as they visit Pittsburgh PA to take on the Penguins. The game will take place on October 9th and game time will be at 7:00 PM eastern.
