There was a sense that Drury wanted to make major changes to the lineup as he felt disappointed in how the season came to an end in the third round of the playoffs. Quotes like nothing's off the table and the sense of change might have been coming to the Rangers, but they have been modest at best.
Removing Barclay Goodrow's contract of $3.6 million per season and the way he did it certainly sparked many pundits and general managers across the league that the Rangers were serious. Then rumors of Jacob Trouba's contract being traded to the Detroit Red Wings were blocked by Trouba and did not materialize.
Drury decided to change his priorities and decided to lock up Braden Schneider to a bridge deal of two years and 2.2 million per season.
This is a good value contract for the Rangers and Schneider which gives them a chance to see if he can grow his game and take the next steps. Ryan Lindgren is next and many hope that this deal can be locked up sooner rather than later as the forecast cap hit will be around 3.5 million per season.
Once he's signed, there will be no longer any free agents to be signed on the roster and not much money do any upgrades. This will disappoint fans and it seems that Trouba will remain with the Rangers until the beginning of the season.
That being said, there's still enough summer left that a change could come out of nowhere it could reshape the roster in a very short amount of time.
