We now know when Mika Zibanejad will be leaving the the New York Rangers
Will Mika Zibanejad be leaving the New York Rangers after this season? It seems after the 2023-2024 season he underperformed in the playoffs, which is cause for alarm, regarding one of your top players.
Zibanejad is currently in year 3 of an 8-year contract, with a cap hit of $8.5 Million AAV.
We're certain there'd be many teams who'd salivate at the prospect of acquiring one of the Rangers' best players.
Despite the lack of elite play last season, he still notched 72 points( 26 G, 46 A) which is still good by anyones standards.
But, with a No-trade-Clause until the final year of his eight-year deal, it makes moving Zibanejad a bit difficult.
Per The Athletic:
The details: Zibanejad is in the third year of an eight-year deal that carries an $8.5 million hit. He'll be 37 when it expires.
The case that it's a bad contract: It would be largely similar to the one we just laid out for Scheifele, given how similar the contracts are. Zibanejad also has a full no-move clause until the final year of his deal, whereas Scheifele has only a partial no-trade list after 2027. And Scheifele's deal has fewer bonuses, so it's easier to buy out.
However, when Sean McIndoe asked X about who you'd rather have on your team, should it come to a trade. It offered an interesting context, as the question was who'd you take, Mark Scheifle or Mika?
The answer was overwhelmingly, in favor of Mika.
If GM Chris Drury could work some magic in the future, like including a third-team to move this "untradeable" deal, some NHL fans might find it favorable.
But for now, Mika's deal is a bit difficult considering the term and AAV attached.
