The Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers long-time rival, bought out forward Cam Atkinson's contract yesterday. Well, today, we got an update.
The 31 other NHL teams decided to not pick up Cam, leading him to clear waivers and be a little burden on the Flyers cap space at a $2,358,333 penalty this year and a $1,78,333 penalty next year, according to CapFriendly.
He was originally going to have a $5+ million cap hit in his final year of the contract, so this helped the Flyers greatly, saving $3 million this season. The Flyers could be gearing up to make some type of trade or signing during the off-season.
This, of course, gives any team the right to sign Atkinson if they wish during free agency. Maybe the Rangers make a run at him for less money.
