The premise is that several of these teams are all within six points of one another and as the season wore on many pundits across the NHL felt that many of these teams have not done a great job in closing out a playoff spot and putting their opponents behind them.
As of late, the Rangers rivals the Washington Capitals have done the best job in terms of trying to lock up a playoff spot.
With so many teams in the Eastern Conference playoff race not getting the job done by closing out their position, it continues to linger this question on whether who will take the final wild card spot.
From the Rangers perspective it doesn't really matter on how all this plays out as they are in the playoffs and potentially presidents trophy winners.
The team continues to play excellent as it prepares for the first round, and once this issue of teams settling and securing a playoff spot, the rangers will know who their first round opponent is.
Currently, the Washington Capitals would be the Rangers first round opponent as they sit in the second wild card spot.
It would be a great match up as Alexander Ovechkin would face off against Artemi Panarin.
