The New Jersey Devils are one of those teams that is trying to acquire an elite goaltender to give the team stability as this season has not gone as well as they've hoped.
The Devils are currently sitting just outside the playoff picture being four points out of the second wild card spot which is held by the Detroit Red Wings.
With goaltending as their main priority, it was mentioned during the New York Rangers Calgary Flames game that trade talks have been swirling between the Devils and the Flames for starting goalie Jacob Markstrom.
Making this deal happen would send shockwaves across the Eastern Conference as bringing Markstrom over from the West would change the balance.
The 34-year-old is currently in a six-year $36 million contract which holds a no move clause.
His cap hit is 6,000,000 per season and he has two years remaining after this years completed.
This kind of trade would be a huge boost for the Devils in terms of solidifying that position and giving the team turn knowing that their number one goalie is taken care of.
He also could give the Devils a chance to go on a serious run as the team has significant offence and gives them a chance to go to work.
As mentioned, these talks have only been preliminary and have stalled.
I would expect both GM's Craig Conroy and Tom Fitzgerald to continue their dialogue to see if a trade can be done.
Rangers fans will need to watch and see if this trade comes about.
