Elliotte Friedman reveals the Rangers and Sabres are reportedly set to combine for a blockbuster trade
The New York Rangers could miss the playoffs this season, which could trigger big changes in the lineup. The team has already moved Kaapo Kakko and Jacob Trouba, and according to an NHL Insider believes more moves could be on the way between the team, and the Buffalo Sabres.
While the New York Rangers did get some assets out of the Trouba, and Kakko deals to Anaheim, and Seattle the team isn't finished shaking up the lineup yet.
With the team 2-8-0 in their last ten this stretch, it is apparent there is something wrong in the locker room.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman believes that there could be more moves on the way.
While no names were revealed, Elliotte Friedman hinted at a deal as both teams were active on the trade market before the holiday roster freeze, and he believes they could start to become active again. With the Rangers' newfound cap space from the trades they have already made, they could look to make a trade with the Sabres that involves players who need a fresh start which in turn, could shake up both teams as they try to fight their way up from the bottom.
Big Moves Ahead
With the Rangers' recent trades, the team has $9.1 Million available in salary cap space and could make a massive move, without any impacts on the team's finances.
It's well known after recent reports that both Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider are available if the price is right.
But with Zibanejad's no-movement clause, it could make it difficult to send him to the Sabres who are not a contending team at the moment.
The Sabres currently sit 8th in the Atlantic Division with a 14-20-4 record and have 32 points. The Rangers currently sit 8th in the Metropolitan Division with a 16-19-1 record and have 33 points. The Rangers are 2-8-0 in their last 10 games while the Sabres are 3-7-0.
Trade Targets
Who would the Rangers want from the Sabres lineup? Dylan Cozens could be one player the Rangers could afford to add to the team and give him a fresh start with the Blueshirts.
While they could also entertain adding power-forward Jason Zucker, or Nicolaus Aube-Kubel as depth adds to the offense.
While idealistically, the Rangers should target someone like Cozens, it seems likely smaller pieces might move between the franchises.
For now, all we can do is speculate on GM Kevyn Adams, and GM Chris Drury's next moves which could happen in March.
