The Vancouver Canucks had one Rangers prospect in their sights, but GM Chris Drury and the team refused to give him up. Instead, they offered Victor Mancini in return, along with Filip Chytil.

The Vancouver Canucks have had their eye on Braden Schneider before they had finished the deal which sent Victor Mancini instead.
Initially, it was the first-round pick alone that held up the first deal which fell through. Resulting in GM Chris Drury having to revisit at least twice before a deal was finalized.
Instead of Victor Mancini, they wanted one of the Rangers' top defensive prospects Drew Fortescue.
According to Arthur Staple, the Rangers refused to include their 2023 third-round pick, whose a top-pairing defenseman for the Boston College Eagles.
«The Canucks were still looking for a defenseman in a deal. Ryan Lindgren, a pending unrestricted free agent who has struggled like many Rangers this season, was in an earlier version of a swap that was rejected,» Arthur Staple of The Athletic wrote. «The Rangers refused to include Drew Fortescue, their third-round pick in 2023 who is currently playing top-pair minutes for Boston College, the No. 1 team in NCAA hockey.»

This came out initially after the first deal for J.T. Miller fell through before the two sides would eventually come to terms.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman would confirm that the Canucks were vociferous in their efforts to acquire Fortescue.
«I heard one of the issues in the first trade was that the prospect they were going to get who they eventually got in Mancini who I think is going to play in the NHL, but I had heard the issue was they wanted a prospect who was unsigned yet by the Rangers,» Friedman said. «I didn't know who it was. Arthur Staple of The Athletic reported over the weekend that the Canucks asked about Drew Fortescue, who is one of the Rangers top D prospects

«I thought it was interesting because I had heard Vancouver wanted a defenseman, someone the Rangers hadn't signed yet, and the fact that Arthur had that in his article indicates to me that was a player the Canucks liked.»

The Rangers have future plans for their 3rd-round draft pick, Fortescue.
This season he's played 23 for the Boston College Eagles he's scored 8 points and has a total of 36 PIMs.
Could he be the Rangers' next top defenseman?
