During the post game interview for head coach Peter laviolette after his Rangers had defeated the Capitals 4-1, a reporter asked him if he had any insight onto how the Capitals worked and does it give him an advantage as he was their head coach last season. Laviolette explained he may have some insight but it doesn't mean he knows exactly what would happen.
Laviolette coached the capitals from 2020 through 2023 and during that time he took the team through two rounds of playoffs while exiting in the first round against Boston and Florida. He explained to the reporter that even though he had some insight, the pre scouting that was done on the capitals was the reason they were very effective against ovett skin as he was held to no shots in the entire game for the first time since 2018.
On paper, this is a very lopsided match up as the Rangers hold most metrics in offence, defence and goaltending. The Capitals came into this playoff but the lowest goals for in the entire playoffs and the worst goal differential at -37.
It remains to be seen on how the capitals will adjust in Game 2 as Laviolette explained that Ovechkin will move around to open more space for him to get shots through. But if the Rangers stay to their game plan then continue to hold Ovechkin, it will make it even more difficult for the capitals to win this series.
