It was reported earlier yesterday from Mollie Walkerr of the NHL Network that New York Rangers top prospect Brennan Othmann has sustained an upper body injury an now will be out until at least Christmas.

The injury was suffered more than a week ago and according to the Hartford Wolf Pack, he will be out for a timeline of four to six weeks. Since being cut from the Rangers, the 21 year old forward has played three season games with the Wolfpack and has five points with two goals and three assists.

Standing at six feet 192 lbs, he was drafted by the Rangers in 2021, in the first-round 16th pick overall. Several pundits felt that he had a legitimate chance of making the Rangers lineup this season as he was one of the final cuts prior to the season opener.

But head coach Peter Laviolette had other intentions and felt that he needed to find more consistency which led him to go back to the American Hockey League.

«I thought he had a good camp,» Laviolette said. «There were games where I thought he was noticeable. With regard to becoming a regular, just finding that consistency. I think when you are a young player, that consistency inside of your game is something that needs to be worked on. He came in great shape, that was good. He had some good moments, that was good too. The fact that he can play both sides is a positive.

«At the end of the day from a development standpoint I think going down there and taking on the minutes and playing more in every situation is going to help him to get back to this level. I think just finding that consistency inside of his game.»

With the Rangers fully competitive and the likelihood of Othmann making the Rangers on the third or fourth line seems detrimental to the young star. He would be better off to remain in the American Hockey League at least for the remainder of this year and continued to develop his game and received proper minutes and be ready to be nominated to be on the main roster at some point soon.
