During the recent episode of the Jeff Marek Show, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek discussed the upcoming contract for Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin To which both men compared his upcoming deal to former Canadiens superstar Carey Price.
During that segment, NHL goaltender contracts were discussed and how many goalies in the league are underpaid. As the conversation expanded, Marek asked Friedman what he thought Shesterkin's next contract would look like to which Friedman stated it would be the richest contract in the NHL for a goalie.
It was mentioned that Carey Price who held the contract worth 10.5 million was 14% worth of the cap yet and as the cap will rise, that 14% will set the new bar for a goalie which will be over $12 million per year. Shesterkin will be commanding a very large payday when it comes to re signing him as he is completing his four year $22.6 million deal which holds a cap hit of 5.66 million per season.
It will be a fascinating negotiation to see how much the Rangers are willing to pay for this goaltender and it will also come down to what his agent will tell him as the Rangers would like to build around him and continue their winning window for potential Stanley Cup.
