Peter Laviolette issues controversial statement on Brett Berard's first stint with the New York Rangers
The New York Rangers have sent Brett Berard down to the AHL after recalling depth forward Bo Groulx. The move could be a paper transaction Berard has developing to do but after Peter Laviolette's interview today.
Brett Berard was recalled from the Hartford Wolfpack on November 24th, 2024 and has been a staple in the team's lineup. Up until now, as the team has sent him back down to Hartford after his first stint.
After his short time in the NHL, Head Coach Peter Laviolette was able to capture an idea of what the forward was capable of, and how he can be a benefit to the Rangers lineup in the NHL.
Instead of blasting Berard like some coaches do, Laviolette offered context of development and focused primarily on that aspect of Berard's game.
It seems, Laviolette thinks Berard has more to learn in the AHL, and could benefit from more playing time rather than just third-line minutes.
This season Berard played 19 games in the NHL and scored 7 points ( 3 G, 4 A ) and will likely get another callup after his first successful stint.
Berard, 22, leads the Wolf Pack in both goals with seven and points with 13 (7 g, 6 a) on the season. He recorded a goal in the club's 4-2 loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
Berard has been on the Wolfpack's best forwards and can immediately return to the AHL and make an impact in the lineup.
Berard was one of the last forwards during training camp to be return to the minors, and has turned heads since his 48 point season in the AHL in 2023-2024.
The forward was a fifth-round draft pick by the Rangers 134th overall in 2020 and has proven himself to be a capable, gritty forward on the ice.
