Rangers Play-By-Play Announcer Sam Rosen Wins Prestigious Award
The NHL has announced their 2024 Lester Patrick Trophy Award winner.
That recipient will be soon to be retiring, Sam Rosen who has been calling the New York Rangers hockey games since 1984.
He called historic moments, including the 1994 Stanley Cup run with Captain Mark Messier and the team overcoming the odds to beat the Vancouver Canucks to win it all.
He has been awarded the Trophy which is of special significance to hockey culture and its contributors in America.
The award has been given out since 1966:
Description: First awarded in 1966, the Lester Patrick Trophy is presented annually «for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.» Players, officials, coaches and executives are eligible recipients.
The Award was presented to the NHL by the New York Rangers in 1966 and has become of cultural significance, honoring Lester Patrick who held multiple hats in the NHL from Coach to General Manager, and player.
Rosen has been announcing games in the NHL for four decades and has been doing such a great job, keeping fans enthralled with his narration of the games, and the stories surrounding them.
«After four decades, Sam Rosen's golden pipes, dedication to his craft and unabashed passion for our game as the television voice of the New York Rangers still resonate,» NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. «When Sam is doing play-by-play, he not only keeps viewers abreast of the game and its surrounding stories, he uniquely sweeps up his audience in the unmatched excitement of hockey. Few fans can remember a time when Sam Rosen was not the voice of New York Rangers hockey. As fine a man as he is a broadcaster, and for a career spent in remarkable service to the game in the United States, Sam Rosen is a worthy recipient of the 2024 Lester Patrick Trophy.»
Rosen's iconic signature call, «It's a power play goal!» and his words as the Rangers secured the 1994 Stanley Cup championship in Game 7 of the Final, «The waiting is over, the New York Rangers are the Stanley Cup champions, and this one will last a lifetime!» are indelible nuggets of franchise lore.
Rosen not only has been the voice of the Rangers since 1984 but from 1996 to 2008 has served as the voice of the Stanley Cup Finals on NHL radio.
His resume speaks for himself, as he joins the Rangers in their hunt for a Stanley Cup, their first since 1994.
