The New York Rangers will look a bit younger against the Pittsburgh Penguins on opening night at 7:30 PM.
The team has added rookie defenseman Victor Mancini to the lineup on the bottom-pairing with Zac Jones, as LHD.
Not only did Zac Jones make camp after a long look, but so did Mancini and he got his shot arguably through his hard work and dedication.
So tonight, Mancini will get his first shot in the NHL, against the
Sidney Crosby-led Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Rangers have announced they will be changing his number, which he wore #23 in the AHL with the Hartford Wolfpack.
He will wear #90 in the NHL, during his debut tonight.
There were only three other NHL players to don #90 before tonight:
Mancini will be the fourth Ranger ever to wear #90 and look to capitalize upon his shot in the NHL in the hopes that one day he will be a fixture in the Rangers lineup long-term.
The rookie defenseman is excited to be a Ranger, and who wouldn't it's a historic franchise, with playoff potential.
«You couldn't wipe the smile off my face,» Mancini said Wednesday morning. «Obviously, this is something you've been working for since you were a little kid. Super pumped to be here, but you know this is only the beginning. You want this just to be the beginning.»
We will see if Mancini can help suffocate an already troubled Penguins offense, to the Rangers first victory of the season.
Mancini played 40 games with the University of Nebraska-Omaha last season scoring 10 points( 4 G, 6 ) and would debut in Hartford last season playing 7 games scoring 3 points.
It is up to him to grab the brass ring and decide how long his NHL career will be from here.
