Three significant takeaways the Rangers must acknowledge from their disappointing loss to Colorado
The New York Rangers are now 14th in the Eastern Conference with their loss to the Colorado Avalanche. What are three things we can take away from their overtime loss last night?
Peter Laviolette and Rangers players expressed their frustration with a lack of finishing capability, as they couldn't stop the Avalanche.
They'd give up an overtime goal to defenseman Devin Toews and were only able to secure a point.
Placing them 5 points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Metropolitan Division.
«The frustrating thing is not to get the second point in the column which we need,» Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said postgame. «That's why everybody's just frustrated and irritated with the night»
The Rangers are no 20-20-3, and 7th in the Metropolitan Division, just above the bottom-feeding Islanders.
1. Blackwood Stops An Avalanche
Mackenzie Blackwood with the Colorado Avalanche has come into his prime, as he stopped numerous high-danger chances created by the Rangers.
Keep in mind, this wasn't only a game of just 27 saves alone:
He stopped an inordinate amount of Grade A scoring chances for the Rangers, including a clean
Adam Edstrom breakaway just 2:38 into the game, another by Alexis Lafreniere at 2:56 of the second and one by
Mika Zibanejad 3:08 into overtime
Blackwood stopped seven chances during a Rangers power-play, and then three more on a 4-3 man advantage soon after. Blackwood did his best to hold off the Rangers and their best efforts.
The Fourth line were major contributors, as
Sam Carrick and Adam Edstrom kept the Rangers in the game against the Avalanche. This was the first time Edstrom scored in consecutive games, while Carrick scored two goals in his last three games.
Both have found ways to contribute to the Rangers' success when no one else is found to have an impact.
As for Carrick and the penalty kill, they came up big against the Avalanche big guns Tuesday. The Rangers were 3-for-3 on the PK and allowed only one shot in six minutes while down a man.
Carrick was able to convert on the penalty kill, which was impressive, as Rempe's hit contributed to the 2-on-1 goal as a result of the turnover.
3. Say Hello To My Little Friends
For once Shesterkin was able to get help in clearing the crease, thanks to
Ryan Lindgren and Vinnie Troecheck.
Combined the team alone blocked 22 shots on goal, limiting the Avalanche's chances to score.
The Rangers put together a great effort, but if the Avalanche didn't have Mackenzie Blackwood in the net, there's a chance they could've won.
But that's still no excuse, as they should've hustled in overtime.
