New York Rangers Set To Sign 3x Stanley Cup Champion Following Latest Development
With news of Jonathan Toews's return to the NHL imminent, should the Rangers take a gamble on him? GM Chris Drury should look into the cost of signing the three-time Stanley Cup champion for leadership reasons alone.
The New York Rangers could secure a great bottom-six center, if they decide to make an effort to sign Jonathan Toews.
Since his announcement of a possible return, there's been speculation that several teams would be interested in the veteran's services.
At age 36, you won't be getting Toews in his prime, but he would be rested, and ready to contribute in any capacity he can.
While it's doubtful the former Blackhawk would sign a lucrative deal, a return to any form of play is a victory for Toews, and Blackhawks fans themselves.
Not only that, he could slot in on the third line which would give the Rangers true depth down the middle, and flexibility with forwards on the bottom six.
Giving them more of a balanced profile, in order to spread out offensive weapons Will Cuylle, Filip Chytil, Chris Kreider, giving Adam Edstrom some real support.
My super scout Jess Rubenstein adds this note: "The funny thing is that before last season Brod wasn't even expected to play fornthe Rangers. He was signed to a two-year extension with the plan that he'd be the Hartford captain and help the younger players."
Toews's Suitors
The Rangers will have to contend with some other clubs like the Maple Leafs who have been linked to Toews beforehand.
However with GM Chris Drury's relentlessness, this shouldn't be a challenge for the front office.
According to Seravalli, the three teams leading the race to land the former three-time Stanley Cup champion and Blackhawks legend are the Leafs, the Winnipeg Jets and the Colorado Avalanche.
«The Leafs, Jets and Avalanche are all legitimate Stanley Cup contenders," Seravalli said. «They'd be interested to see what one of the most clutch players of his generation still has left in the tank."
Could the Rangers beat out the Leafs, Jets, and Avalanche to secure a contract that could help win a Stanley Cup? We'll see.
