The Washington Capitals and Ted Leonsis has decided to purchase the website CapFriendly. A beloved resource across the hockey world, full of important information journalists and hockey nerds follow.
The team and the site have announced that the website will be shutdown, when the transaction is completed in July, after free agency, so we all get one final run with this invaluable public resource.
The resource will be shuttered on July 5th, enough for us all to see it through the NHL Draft.
While we're happy that the creators of this resource will be paid handsomely for their amazing creations, this is a public resource.
There will be another ready to step in and fill the void, with Sportrac and PuckPedia as alternatives, but nothing as user-friendly as CapFriendly.
Multiple teams had deals with the website, to use the tools and API provided by the website. The unnamed teams, however, received their contracts would be terminated.
There was speculation a single team had purchased the site and its infrastructure, and now we know.
For now, the juicy details of the transaction including value remain hidden from the public eye.
For now, we will salute CapFriendly for its service and mourn its eventual loss at the beginning of July.
The Washington Capitals will be the benefactors of this site and its resources and it's unfair.
May they never see a Metropolitan Division title again.
