The organization granted him permission after he spoke to the media about his frustration about not being able to play. It's become clear that the Rangers do not feel he fits what they're looking for but will give him the opportunity to find a new home.
This move is one of many that will transpire over the next two months as the trade deadline It's just under 60 days away. General manager Chris Drury appears to be dead set on making changes to his lineup as he has done several trades over the past couple of months.
It appears the Rangers are not concerned about trading their younger players as Jones is a 24-year-old defenseman who was chosen by the Rangers in the third round in 2019, 68th overall.
His last game played was on December 23rd where he had accumulated no points and no shots but played 18 minutes and 24 seconds of ice time. Through 26 games,
he's only scored one goal with seven assists for eight points and as a +2.
This is his fifth season with the Rangers but appears to be ready for a new challenge and a change of scenery that could re spark his career.
With Jacob Trouba, Barclay Goodrow and Kappo Kakko all removed from the lineup and now Jones on his way out, the Rangers will continue their remodeling project and perhaps maybe sellers at the deadline to retool the team for next year.
There will be several teams on the market looking to add a defenseman especially in their bottom 3. Adding Jones would certainly give more depth and likely not cost more than a draft pick to obtain his services.
After their defeat in overtime against the stars last evening 5-4, the Rangers will await their archrival the New Jersey Devils who will play on January 9th and game time will be 7:00 PM eastern.
