The New York Rangers could benefit from a toxic situation in Vancouver, as the Canucks could move on from either JT Miller or Elias Pettersson. Who will the Rangers target?

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks have begun to test the market for both forwards.

But the team and the forwards have different needs and requests.

«So in calling around, this is what I can tell,» Friedman said. «It's that the Canucks are definitely, definitely looking at the market for both players, and you should be prepared for all outcomes. There's really three of them: neither gets dealt, one of them gets dealt, or both get dealt.

«That's on the table, and I don't want to predict the likelihood of any particular scenario, but I think all three of those outcomes are possible. Other things I can tell, just from making the calls, if the Canucks do make a trade, they're going to need a centre in return.»

However, there have been reports that GM Chris Drury is willing to do whatever it takes to acquire Miller.

There are obstacles in the road to maneuver if the Rangers are to acquire East Palestine, OH born forward again. One of those is a NTC, unlike Pettersson the veteran has one attached to his contract.

«I do think the Rangers are interested, but I don't know how easy that match is going to be,» Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. «If Vancouver wanted to do Zibanejad and again Zibanejad has a no-move clause too, so he'd have to want to do it, I think that could be done already. I'm not banking on that.

«The guy I could see Vancouver really liking is Schneider, but I'm not convinced at all the Ranger would want to do that, as a matter of fact, I'm convinced they wouldn't just because I think they want to keep Schneider.»

According to NHL Insider Nick Kypreos, Miller might waiver it for the Rangers considering the familiarity he has with the team.

«I get the impression that J.T. Miller doesn't want to go anywhere, and he's got a no-move (clause),» Kypreos said on the "Real Kyper & Bourne" show on Thursday. "If this guy needs to green light (a trade), I do believe there's one spot he would maybe lift his no-move and that would be the New York Rangers."

If he were, this would be a coup for GM Chris Drury as he could potentially be one piece that could improve the Rangers lineup, and morale as a gritty, two-way forward who scored 100+ points in 2023-2024.

Miller is in year two of a seven-year deal that pays hum $8 Million annually. The Canucks could sweeten the deal by retaining a percentage of salary, if they feel generous enough.
