While Alex Chiasson was never an NHLer who attained stardom, he did win a Stanley Cup. With 651 NHL games underneath his belt, he is calling it quits.

Chiasson is a former Stanley Cup champion who won one with the New York Rangers Metropolitan Division rivals, the Washington Capitals.

That could be considered the high point of this depth forward's career in the NHL, as he'd become a journeyman soon after.

The forward was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Draft and would post consecutive 60+ point seasons in the NHL.

Between 2014 and 2023, he would lend his services to several NHL teams, ranging from the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Detroit Red Wings, with a stop in the AHL along the way.

With a cup to his name, and unable to find work in the NHL has decided to call it a career and retire.

Chiasson has played 651 NHL games and scored 233 points(120 G, 113 A) and 359 PIMs.

Chiasson will have a tall task to earn a contract with the Red Wings after not playing professional hockey at all last season. He had signed a tryout contract with the Boston Bruins, but was cut from the team at the end of training camp. In Detroit, he'll have to beat out players like Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno, Tyler Motte, or Christian Fischer - which feels extremely unlikely.

Chiasson originally came out of retirement at the beginning of this season in order to see if he could win a spot on the Detroit Red Wings roster.

He would unfortunately miss out on a roster spot as the Wings would release him from the PTO on October 2nd, 2024.

While he wouldn't get another shot in the NHL, he had already attained the toughest prize in 2018 with the Washington Capitals, the Stanley Cup.

You don't always need to be a star to be successful in the NHL.
