New York Rangers legend and 4x Stanley Cup Champion sadly passes away at 89-years old
We lament the passing of NHL legend, Al MacNeil. The former NHLer and Head Coach is a 4X Stanley Cup winner and won each one with the Montreal Canadiens.
MacNeil is a former NHL Legend who began his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1955 season and would go on to play with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers.
His last NHL stop was with the Pittsburgh Penguins, for one season, who claimed him in the 1967 Expansion Draft.
Additionally, he played for two AHL clubs, the Rochester Americans and the Montreal Voyageurs, while skating in the EPHL and CHL.
The Calgary Flames released a statement on the passing of Al MacNeil today.
«Al was a great man who will be dearly missed by our organization,» said Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation Chairman Murray Edwards. «He was a long-term loyal member of our Flames family ever since the team's arrival in Calgary in 1980. He played, coached, and managed in both the NHL and AHL, and had ultimate success while doing so. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Norma, son Allister, daughter Allison, son-in-law Paul Sparkes and grandsons Jack and Ben.»
MacNeil would begin his coaching career in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, where he'd win a cup three times, during the 1972, 1973, and 1974 seasons.
Perhaps a premonition of things to come in the NHL, as he'd be responsible for coaching the Habs to four Stanley Cups.
Al MacNeil played in five leagues over the course of his career. Learn more about them from these League History pages.
Ontario Hockey League
National Hockey League
American Hockey League
Eastern Professional Hockey League
Central Hockey League
MacNeil would continue his coaching career in the NHL starting as the Head Coach of the Atlanta Flames in 1979 and would remain with the club during the move to Calgary in 1980.
Thanks to his decades of contributions to the game on and off the ice, MacNeil is a member of the AHL Hockey Hall of Fame, the Nova Scotia Hall of Fame, and the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame.
We send our condolences to the MacNeil family, friends, and former teammates of this former NHL legend.
