This poor play was clear when the Rangers were drubbed 6-1 against the Buffalo Sabres.
Nothing was going right for the team but Avery felt at Miller could have offered a much better effort especially in the defensive zone.
In his sequence he showed, Avery pointed out that Miller skated without engaging the opposition and then was beaten by the forward and even lost his stick which led to a goal.
Miller has had a solid start to his season as head coach Peter Laviolette paired him with Adam Fox. Both players found some chemistry and became dominant at times up until recently.
Miller was a - 3 against the Sabres which is unacceptable. Laviolette has grown to depend on Miller as he has been granted 22 minutes of average ice time this season.
Miller, who stands at six foot 5 and 210 lbs provides the Rangers that toughness they're looking for. He was drafted by the Rangers in 2018, first round 22nd overall.
Whether this is a blip in his season and likely the coach reining him back in or could this be a longer-term issue remains to be seen.
Despite Avery's criticism, the Rangers are preparing to dust off that Buffalo game and prepare for their next contest where they will be on the road to take on former Ranger Patrick Kane and his Detroit Red Wings.
The game will take place on October 9th at Little Caesars Arena and puck drop will be at 7:00 PM eastern.
