That puts him as the worst for that stat which has some cause to question why the Rangers decided to give him the most money for any goaltender in NHL history. The Rangers made the decision to give him an 8 year deal earlier this fall worth $92 million which puts him at $11.5 million per season.
That contract will kick in and next season and could be a great or an albatross of a contract for the Rangers going forward. The Rangers are recently going through the worst losing streak in recent memory and these heavy losses that the Rangers are taking are taking a toll on Shesterkin.
For the first time in a long time his goals against average in his regular season are now over three goals a game and his save percentage continue to drop which is close to just hovering over .900.
It's quite likely that this is just a blip because of the issues that Rangers are facing. If the team were to turn things around in front of Shesterkin, the Russian netminder would be able to recover some of his numbers and give the Rangers the quality goaltending they need.
But this disastrous stretch has all but made it impossible for the Rangers to finish in the top three in the metropolitan division and now have become a long shot at a potential wild card spot as the Rangers continued to sit outside the playoffs.
With that in mind, general manager Chris Drury has a major decision to make. Does he retool his team through trade and try to continue to push for playoff spot or does he decide to put the TNT to this line up and blow up the entire roster and start over again with some pieces remaining.
It's still early to think of what the Rangers may do but as the calendar ticks over to 2025 in the next few days, the next month or so will be clear on what the Rangers will do next and likely could become sellers at the deadline which was considered unheard of less than one year ago.
After their 6-2 drubbing against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Rangers will continue their Florida trip and take on in a rematch against the Florida Panthers at sunrise FL spirit game time will be at 7:00 PM eastern on December 30th.
