The New York Rangers are in a rock and a hard place, as the team is 16-18-1 and 8th in the Metropolitan Division. Elliotte Friedman today on Sportsnet mentioned that Peter Laviolette is on the hot seat with the team's front office. Could he be fired soon?

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Larry Brooks of the New York Post has verifiable sources.

One of those sources has said that Head Coach Peter Laviolette is on the hot seat with the Rangers.

Considering GM Chris Drury announced that he wouldn't let this core fire another coach, it appears it could happen regardless.

Could it be that Owner James Dolan is angry with the product on the ice, and heads are going to roll soon?

It was only yesterday that the New York Post documented the downfall of Laviolette in his 2nd-year on the job:

Ownership and management had no stomach for this. The hierarchy was not going to allow this flawed core to fire another head coach less than two years after beseeching GM Chris Drury to dismiss Gerard Gallant in May 2023 - 11 months after going to the conference final.

But that's what this splintered core has effectively done, even if Peter Laviolette remains behind the Rangers bench much like a broken general pleading with his troops not to desert the battlefield. It is only a matter of time, whether it is this week, next month or the moment the season ends.

This is like the old movie plot in which a man has been poisoned and knows he will die in 24 hours but takes the time left to track down his murderer. But in this case, it does not take nearly that long to identify the culprit.

It's the core.

The Rangers are in a bad way. They have traded Kaapo Kakko, and Jacob Trouba while the team hasn't improved at all.

The best line on the team with Will Cuylle, Filip Chytil, and Kaapo Kakko is no more.

While stagnation permeates through the locker room.

Do drastic situations call for drastic measures? In this instance, maybe.
